SPEAKER: JOHN ASHCROFT, U.S. ATTORNEY GENERAL

Please be seated, thank you. Thank you.

Gee, I hope you saved some of that for the end of my remarks, you know.

(LAUGHTER)

Gosh, you know, if someone is the unmerited optimist, I mean, optimism is to applaud in advance.

But what a nice introduction, thank you.

I have to say to you how much I appreciate this opportunity to be with you. I'm grateful for the fact that this National Lawyers Convention of the Federalist Society comes at an extraordinary moment in our nation's history, and I want to thank you.

For three years now we've waged a concerted multi-front war against terrorism at home and around the globe. We've worked to secure our beloved homeland to keep it safe from further attack.

Overseas, we've liberated the peoples of two nations. We've...
