[*] WHITMAN: Well, good morning, and welcome.

Good afternoon to Colonel Vail.

Colonel Vail, can you hear me? This is Brian Whitman at the Pentagon.

VAIL: I can hear you. Good morning.

WHITMAN: Well, thank you for joining us this morning.

This is Colonel Thomas Vail. He is the commander of the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division. He's commanded that brigade since July of 2004, and his unit includes approximately 4,000 infantry, armor, artillery, cavalry and support troops. The brigade also works closely with about 15,000 Iraqi security forces in and around Baghdad.

He's speaking to us today from Camp Liberty in Baghdad. And sticking with our normal format, we'll turn it over to him to give us an overview, and then we'll get into some questions.
