SEN. CLINTON HOLDS A TOWN HALL MEETING, WEBSTER CITY, IOWA

SPEAKER: SEN. HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON, D-N.Y.

[*] CLINTON: What we're going to do is hear from some people who have firsthand experience, some of your neighbors, some of your fellow Iowans who are facing a lot of the challenges that people in the middle class are facing all over this state and America.

First, I want to turn to David Mitchell. David is 47, a young man. He and his wife, Sharon, have six children -- congratulations -- including two at college in Iowa State and one who is a high-school senior.

He works for Fort Dodge Animal Health, a large manufacturer and distributor of animal health care products; so livestock and pets.

He's struggling to save for retirement, given the expenses of putting his kids through college. And his wife Sharon is a full-time substitute teacher. So they're working hard every single day.

David, thank you for being with us.

MITCHELL: Thank you.

CLINTON: And I would love for you to, perhaps, just to share a few of your thoughts about some of these issues that we're talking about today.

MITCHELL: Maybe children has been challenging it, but for us to make it -- and I mean, to save enough for their college and for my 401(k), we have -- the parents, I think, have to do without -- some.

And it's difficult. You know, college is expensive. But I think it's important for everybody that they need to save some money somewhere, somehow because, like you said, it's only going to get tougher. So...

CLINTON: Well, that's exactly right.

And, you know, I think that my plan presumes people will be personally responsible. I mean, you can't, you know, just live for today; you've got to plan for tomorrow.
