[*] PELOSI: Good morning. For a long time now, an ethical cloud has hung over this Capitol. Yesterday's criminal indictment of Majority Leader DeLay is the latest example of Republicans in Congress being plagued by this culture of corruption. Certainly, Mr. DeLay deserves his day in court, and the American people deserve their day when we will be working for them: for jobs, for health care, for education, for the needs of people affected by Katrina, for consumers at the pump, and for taxpayers.

But we are in a situation where the Republican Leader in the Senate is under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission and by the Justice Department in New York state, and the Republican Leader in the House is under indictment. This is really historic, but not surprising. This all extends to the White House as well, where the President's chief political adviser is under investigation for leaking national security information; where the White House's chief procurement officer was arrested last week; where Jack Abramoff, who has ties to House Republicans, Senate Republicans, and the ...
