OCTOBER 7, 2005SPEAKERS: SENATOR MARY L. LANDRIEU (D-LA)[*] LANDRIEU: I'm going to give a very brief statement and then just answer your questions. I, as you know, did not object to the Vitter-Frist bill, because it was obvious to me, after weeks and months of negotiation, that this was going to be what the Senate was going to pass. And I thank all the senators that negotiated in good faith through the night to get to this point. But, again, I think I've made my points very clear, that the Gulf Coast states have been basically forced by the Republican leadership in the House to accept help under conditions that have never been imposed on any state, city, region, county, sheriff, mayor ever before in the history of the country.
